The Power of Being Nimble

Let’s be nimble together so you can manage your day-to-day and still embrace the great ideas your team develops! Photo by Jennifer Paulson

Talented creatives are full of ideas. (Not always good ideas…but we have ideas!) When a great idea surfaces, often the challenge is being able to execute the idea and develop a strategy around it to bring it to life. Staffs are overloaded. Budgets are stretched. Then there’s always “that guy” who nay-says the idea all the way until it’s in the garbage.

There are a few ways to deal with this problem of time-crunch and nay-saying. Consider these solutions.

  1. Do your best not to overload your team. I know, I know. This isn’t always an option. Allowing your team members to schedule “open time” where they think, ideate, and create doesn’t have to be 10 hours a week. It can be one hour a week. Then that one hour can be used strategically to nurture new concepts. Not every great idea requires a huge amount of time—especially with the right talent behind it.

  2. Keep a trusted contractor on speed dial. Hi! That’s me. Ask me to develop new concepts that your team can explore in their weekly creative time. Send me that great new project to develop a strategy plan for your team to use. Or bring me in to work with your team together. (I absolutely love the opportunity to collaborate with teams. I get to offer my expertise and insights and learn from theirs. Total win-win.)

  3. Embrace the nay-sayer. Some great things come from “no.” When we’re placed under parameters or have to rethink things, we have to use our critical thinking skills and get real creative to get the “yes.” So, roll your eyes at the nay-sayer and then get back to work and thank them later when you come up with something even better.

With the right people in place—staff and reliable contractors— and you give your team the time it needs to what it does best, you can get more done, become more nimble, and end up winning a whole lot more.
